Solid practice games give Magpies real hope Shane Barrie Sunday April 4th, 2010
Collingwood's VFL team has had a very solid preseason winning most practice games by considerable margins. Yesterday's game at Victoria Park looked to be no different as the Pies got out to a six goal lead by the the first break. Chris Dawes was proving to be a formidable figure in the forward line and the all aspects of Collingwood's play was impressive from midfield clearances to rebound off half back.
3rd gamer Shae McNamara continues to impress as he rapidly adapts to the new game and is providing very good contests in the Ruck. Jarrod Blight has superb ball handling skills and very good deliver off both sides and is amongst several players that should play AFL football this season. John McCarthy is another who continues to impress and took some very solid grabs and kicked several goals. Jarrod Blair's in and under work will be the driving force in the VFL Magpie's engine room and he appears to never have a bad game. Several others were significant contributors including Lauchlan Keefe, Tom Young, vfl listed players Kris Pendlebury (captain) and Daniel Frost.
When Brent MacAffer and Chris Dawes were sent to the MCG as emergencies for the up coming AFL game, the VFL Magpies lost some structure and appeared very small up forward. Our midfield also opened up allowing the cats back into the game and, after being behind for all of the game, the Cats took the lead late in the last quarter. With an eleven point deficiet the Magpies still had chances to steal the lead back in the dieing minutes with significant misses from Blight, Barham and Rounds.
All in all the signs are very promising that Gavin Brown's squad can take the next step this season and play off in the Grand Final. The Round 1 clash at Victoria Park this Saturday against Williamstown will be a great test of how far this team has come.
